Upgrading to OLED? Here’s What You Should Know

You might think swapping a character LCD for an OLED just means better contrast and a sharper display. But there’s more under the hood—miss a step, and you might face screen issues, shortened lifespan, or even total failure.

OLEDs are self-illuminating, so there’s no need for a backlight circuit—that saves space and power. But you’ll need to rethink your power supply and startup sequence. OLEDs are pickier than LCDs when it comes to voltage stability and command accuracy, and your firmware must be adapted for each controller brand.

Also, switching from LCD to OLED means re-evaluating interface protocols like I²C or SPI and checking if your MCU has the bandwidth and pins to handle it—especially at higher refresh rates.

Power consumption? OLEDs may draw more when fully lit, but for partial or low-frequency displays, they’re impressively efficient—perfect for battery-powered products.
